Rediscovering Italy's forgotten grape varieties
In Italy's vast vineyards, in addition to the internationally renowned grape varieties, there are also numerous autochthonous grape varieties that have long been overlooked and almost forgotten. In recent decades, however, Italian winegrowers and wineries have increasingly begun to recover this treasure trove of grape varieties.Among these autochthonous varieties are some historical grape varieties that had almost been forgotten over time.Recent research has shown that these varieties have considerable potential that has remained largely untapped due to a lack of technology and studies.

These forgotten grape varieties include both red and white wine varieties such as Pecorino and Vernaccia Nera. These grape varieties are of high quality and have a high resistance to pests and diseases; another advantage is that some of the 'forgotten' grape varieties such as Garofanata produce wines with a lower alcohol content compared to international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, but with comparable aromas. The Italian wine landscape is gradually revealing its secrets, and artisan winemakers are striving to make these secrets palatable.

Pecorino, once threatened with extinction, has experienced a renaissance in recent years. This white grape variety, which is mainly found in the Marche, Abruzzo and Umbria regions, had almost been abandoned due to its low yield and susceptibility to disease. However, its unique flavor profile, reminiscent of floral and fruity notes with a hint of minerality, has sparked renewed interest among winemakers and consumers alike. Today, Pecorino wines are gaining recognition both at home and abroad due to their distinctive character and excellent food pairing qualities.

Vernaccia Nera, a red grape variety native to the Marche region, is also making a comeback. Known for its deep color and strong tannins, Vernaccia Nera produces wines with powerful aromas and great ageing potential. Although Vernaccia Nera has faced problems in the past, such as vineyard neglect and limited market demand, it is now being rediscovered by winemakers who appreciate its unique characteristics and cultural significance.

Garofanata, another forgotten grape variety, is attracting renewed interest from Italian winegrowers. This white grape variety, which is native to the Veneto region, was once widely cultivated but gradually fell into oblivion in favor of more commercially viable varieties. However, its ability to produce elegant and aromatic wines with a refreshing acidity has led to a revival in recent years. Winegrowers regard Garofanata as a symbol of Italy's winegrowing heritage and strive to preserve its legacy for future generations.

In summary, the Italian wine industry is undergoing a remarkable transformation as winemakers rediscover and revitalize the country's forgotten grape varieties. Through their dedication and innovation, these winemakers are not only preserving Italy's rich viticultural heritage, but also creating unique and memorable wines that reflect Italy's diverse terroir and cultural identity. As consumers, we have the opportunity to discover and appreciate these hidden gems, as each sip tells a story of resilience, tradition and innovation in Italian winemaking. - Gerardo [TS03/24]
