The name of the most famous wine house in Italy sounds to the wine lover like a whole orchestra full of symbolism and tradition. The oldest traces of the Antinori family date back to 1180, when Ugo and Antinori di Rinuccio appear in documents as owners of the Castello di Combiate. Less than a century later, the family, which by then had moved to Florence, was admitted to the silk merchants' guild. In 1385 Giovanni di Piero, descendant of a collateral line of the family, was admitted to the winemakers' guild as an apprentice and from then on the Antinori's career as wine producers was almost uninterrupted; a career that reached its temporary climax in 1895 with the foundation of the Antinori Wine House. As early as 1898 the winery in San Casciano was built, which is still today the operational heart of the group. Under the direction of Piero Antinori, in recent decades the company has not only put Tuscan viticulture par excellence on a quality course, but has also embarked on an unprecedented expansion movement throughout the world. Santa Christina, Pèppoli, Badia a Passignano, La Braccesca and Belvedere in Tuscany, Castella della Sala in Umbria, Prunotto in Piedmont, even California and, most recently, the Tokaj area in Hungary, where the Antinori are each involved in joint ventures, have been the stations of the empire where the sun (almost) never sets. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
