In a whole series of comparative tastings, it beat just about everything that could be found in the world of prestigious and expensive Merlots. Unlike in France, where, with few exceptions, Merlot is usually the softer, more fruit-driven component of the great Bordeaux wines, here in Ama it is unusually tannic, complex and multi-layered on the nose and palate, and effortlessly incorporates even the most massive loads of new wood into its fruit packages during aging.

The most amazing thing about Ama, however, is not even the top wines, but the enormous range of good to very good wines that Marco Pallanti, the quiet force behind the giant estate, presents to the astonished public year after year. Whether it is the Pinot Grigio Vigna Bellaria, the two Chardonnay, the Pinot Nero Vigna Il Chiuso, the Sauvignon or the simply Colline di Ama from the classic, white varieties, almost always the wines that Pallanti presents - better: that he has presented by Lorenza Sebasti, Formigli's successor, who masters this difficult heritage with Bavour - belong to the best representatives of their kind in a wide area. - Gerardo [TS03/23]

"The origins of the Castello di Ama estate date back to a town from the Etruscan period. Tomaso Carini and three friends GianVittorio Cavanna, Pietro Tradico and Lionello Sebasti initiated the rebirth of this area in the early 1970s. They replanted most of the vineyards and built a modern fermentation cellar. In 1982 they were joined by Marco Pallanti, a Florentine agronomist trained in Bordeaux, who became the winery's oenologist. Lorenza Sebasti, Lionello's daughter, took over the management of the estate in 1993. Marco and Lorenza share the same passion and vision." - Falstaff
