Super Tuscan | Wine Classic

According to legend, a Briton exclaimed 'This is a super Tuscan!' at a wine tasting and thus gave the name to a new generation of wines in the 1970s. At the time, he was referring to Sassicaia, which was created from a blend of Bordeaux grapes at Tenuta San Guido. At the same time, another Supertoscan saw the light of day in the Antinori house. Pietro Antinori was firmly convinced that he could produce wines of the highest quality even outside the rigid DOC regulations. Thus it came about that in 1971 his Tignanello was launched on the market. This wine contained fewer white grapes than prescribed and was also aged in barriques, i.e. wooden barrels, which were unusual at the time. The barriques should remain decisive for the production of the Supertoskaner until today, which gives it an international taste.

The Supertoscan has revolutionized the cultivation of wine in Tuscany, it is said: To this day, he is not subject to any fixed specifications. It can be made just as much from the top-quality Sangiovese grapes as from a blend of Bordeaux grapes. Accordingly variable and individual is also the note of the Supertoskaner. Initially known as 'Vino di Tavola', today Supertoscans carry the IGT seal, which is the second highest quality level for Italian wines. - Gerardo
