Valpolicella | Classic
The reputation of the Valpolicella being offered in very different qualities is due to industrial wine production, which will not be discussed here. In the recent past, special Valpolicella wines - especially from smaller wineries - have been the talk of the town. Special attention was given to Valpolicella in the version of Ripasso, where wine drinkers also accepted noticeable oxidation notes favorably.
Advanced wine drinkers quickly realized that many wineries opted for the more elaborate addition of fresh Amarone marc, without making the wine significantly more expensive. This noble version of Ripasso is basically about increasing the complexity of a wine with artisanal means and skills. In other words, Valpolicella is brought to a level between a normal wine and Amarone, which is made from 100% dried grapes, using dried grapes or must from Amarone production, without even approaching the price level of Amarone. - Gerardo [TS06/23]
"Valpolicella, located between the first hills of the Alps and Lake Garda, is a blessed wine country. However, the great success of Amarone, made from dried grapes, has recently pushed the original wine of the area more and more into the background. This is a shame, because Valpolicella, a juicy red wine with gentle tannins, is what once made the area famous. Valpolicella is made from the grape varieties Corvina, Corvinone and Rondinella and a few other local varieties. A Valpolicella without any other appellation is characterized by its fresh fruit and often comes on the market in the spring after the harvest." - Falstaff

Rio Albo · Valpolicella DOC 2022 (Bio)Ca' Rugate, Veneto
Great, light and fruity Valpolicella from the medium price range: ruby red color. On the nose present and persistent aromas reminiscent of blackberry and cherry. On the palate soft, slightly tannic and tasty. The grapes of Rio Albo come from vineyards in Montecchia di Crosara, which have particularly valuable soils rich in limestone. The Le Ragose variety is in direct contrast to the multitude of industrially produced products that dominate the market. Valpolicella Superiore DOC 2018 (Bio)Musella, Veneto
The grapes for this Valpolicella come from 10-year-old vineyards near Monte del Drago. The result is a red wine of medium weight, fine elegance and balance. To be sure, the Valpolicella name still suffers from the region's misdeeds in the 1980s and 1990s. However, producers like Musella prove that an everyday wine doesn't have to be a sweet, thin infusion. The months of aging in large wooden barrels also suggest how much care Maddalena Pasqua gives to her entry-level wine. - Gerardo [TS08/19]

Borgo · Valpolicella DOC 2021Marion, Veneto
Everything but a simple Valpolicella: At Marion, even the entry-level wine receives similar care as a first growth. The Valpolicella Borgomarcellise is a tangy and fruit-driven red wine, but by no means banal: medium ruby in the glass, delicate hints of wild berries, plums and sweet cherries. Silky and smooth on the palate, and of medium finish. - Gerardo [TS04/22]
