Primitivo (All) | Grape variety

One of the most popular red wines of southern Italy is Primitivo, this is also known as Primitivo di Manduria or Primitivo di Gioia. What they all have in common is that they are powerful, but also fruity and particularly pleasant drops of low acidity. In most cases, the attractiveness of this wine is also underlined by a particularly good price/quality ratio. The name of the grape Primitivo sounds curious, but is ultimately the result of a translation error. Originally it comes from the precocious grape variety on which this wine is based. Over the centuries it became Primitivo, which means 'the simple'.

The Apulian grape variety Primitivo would probably have remained quite unknown had it not been for the recent discovery of a certain similarity with the Californian Zinfandel. The grape variety produces wines with high alcohol content and originality and is also often used for cuvees. In the past, Primitivo was often used as a blending wine, but today the beauty of this grape variety is increasingly recognized. In Puglia, in the heart of the province of Taranto, this ancient grape variety has its own DOC (highest and guaranteed denomination of origin) called 'Primitivo di Manduria'. It is also grown in the area of Gioia del Colle, and in the area of Brindisi Primitivo is often vinified as the only variety. - Gerardo [TS02/23]

"Admittedly: Primitivo is not for filigree drinkers. But he also does not blow up the glass, as many an Australian Shiraz, many a Spaniard and - pardon - even many a Bordeaux from the Right Bank do by now. It is a wine of disciplined richness, easy to understand and uncomplicated to drink. Already for less than six euros there are very decent qualities in the wine trade. If you add a euro or two, you get really good wines - provided you like the style of the wine." - Dr. Jens Priewe
