Primitivo Gioia del Colle | Grape variety

The somewhat less well-known Primitivo Gioia del Colle takes its name from the small town of the same name, located further inland between Bari and Taranto. The Gioia del Colle is usually a bit more structured and, due to the pronounced tannins, also a bit more powerful than other Primitivos. This is partly due to the location: the Gioia del Colle is higher than the rest of the growing area at 350 to 450 meters above sea level. As a result, the nights are cooler and the ripening of the grapes takes a little longer in proportion. The Primitivo from Gioia del Colle received the Protected Designation of Origin in the form of DOC classification in 1987. - Gerardo [TS02/23]

Primitivo Gioia del Colle is a DOC approved wine region in southeastern Italy, known for its excellent Primitivo wines. The wine region is located in the province of Bari in Puglia and was named after the town of Gioia del Colle.

Primitivo Gioia del Colle is known for its full-bodied and fruity wines that have a perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. The wines have a deep red color and aromas of plums, cherries and pepper.

The wine-growing region benefits from a Mediterranean climate with warm and dry summers and mild winters. The grapes here are grown on hills and enjoy good sun exposure and drainage.

There are many wineries in Primitivo Gioia del Colle that offer Primitivo wines in different styles and qualities. Some wineries focus on the traditional style of Primitivo, while others use modern technologies and methods to produce innovative and unique wines.

Primitivo Gioia del Colle wines are excellent with strong dishes such as meat dishes and pasta dishes with tomato sauce. They also have a good shelf life and can be stored for a period of several years to improve their aroma and flavor. - Gerardo [TS02/23]
