Verdicchio | Grape variety

Verdicchio is probably the only white wine of the Marche that enjoys international renown, due in part to its striking green amphora bottle. Although more and more producers are moving away from the so-called 'tourist bottle', many Verdicchios are still bottled in this bottle today. This is not to say anything against the intrinsic value of the wine: even the French admit that with fish it is in no way inferior to Muscadet. The peculiar Verdicchio vine can produce an excellent white wine on the calcareous clay soils of the Marche. It is generally agreed that the vine, which is generally not very hardy, has been cultivated since ancient times. The grapes are usually smaller than average, always green even when ripe, and very thin-skinned. - Gerardo
