Schiava Alto Adige (Alle) | Grape variety
Vernatsch me! Just like its well-known cousin - the St. Magdalener - the classic Vernatschwein is pressed from the red grape of the same name. With the difference that the variants Kalterersee Auslese as well as Sanct Magdalener are supplemented with some Lagrein. Vernatsch is typically grown in South Tyrol, in the area of Überetsch where the wine is known as the Kalterersee. Typical of the Vernatsch grape are the pronounced fruit aroma and the subtle notes of almonds. Today, many varieties of Vernatsch grapes are distinguished, including Großvernatsch, Grauvernatsch, Mittervernatsch, Edelvernatsch, Tschaggelevernatsch and several others. In the Italian-speaking world, the grape variety is known as 'Schiava'. - Gerardo [TS11/23]
