Basilicata | Wine Region

The small region of Basilicata lies deep in the Italian south, in the triangle between Puglia, Calabria and Campania. Basilicata enjoys far less international renown than Italy's flagship regions - partly because viticulture is a real challenge. Vines thrive on about 10,000 hectares in the region, but these are not large, contiguous vineyards - but small, sometimes tiny parcels. Under these difficult conditions, it is not surprising that viticulture is rarely practiced as a main occupation. The classic system of vine training is cultivated as a form of vine training, as this has almost completely prevailed in Basilicata. The subsoil is also well suited for viticulture: The soils - foothills of the Apennines - are partly of volcanic origin. Without a doubt, the Aglianico vine, especially around the DOC Vulture is the drawing card of the local viticulture and is known far beyond the borders of Italy. - Gerardo

"Step by step, harvest by harvest, Basilicata is taking on the contours of a true wine country. In oenological terms, this means that the average level of the respective productions is becoming more constant, and the peculiarities of the various growing zones are peeling out more clearly. On the other hand, today's stylistic guidelines testify to more conscious and well-founded decisions. At the center, as always, is the Vulture area, with its long-established wineries and its countless recent new releases, with its firmly rooted regular winemakers and the well-traveled immigrants who have bought their way here with considerable sums of money." - Gambero Rosso
