Sicily | Red Wine

Sicily - a continent in itself. Unique and charming: the landscapes, the history, the culture and the people. Beach vacationers are just as enthusiastic about the diverse island as amateur archaeologists and nature lovers. In addition, a multicultural cuisine as well as a young wine scene. The island was once one of the most important colonies of Greece and accordingly long there is already a wine tradition here. From the 7th century BC there are numerous findings that indicate a lively cultivation. But the French influence at the beginning of the 10th century, when the Bourbons ruled Sicily, was probably more important. Today, Sicily is considered one of the most dynamic cultivation areas in Italy, with structural changes not older than 10-15 years. Since then, some farms have emerged that have known how to take advantage of the existing potential.

Among the most cultivated Sicilian red grapes are Nero d'Avola, Frappato, Nerello, Syrah and Cabernet. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

"With its output of more than six million hectoliters, Sicily is responsible for 13 to 14 percent of Italy's total wine production and ranks fourth among wine-growing regions. However, there is no need for figures to highlight the position of the island in wine production: The success of its growths in Italy and on the export market is an incontrovertible fact. In little more than two decades, the image of Sicilian products has changed radically." - Gambero Rosso

´Didacus´ · Sicilia Menfi Rosso DOC 2017, Planeta, Sizilien
Didacus · Sicilia Menfi Rosso DOC 2017

Planeta, Sicily

"The back label of the two Didacus wines - the white from Chardonnay, the red from Cabernet Franc - reads: 'This bottle contains our vision of wine. Elegance and tradition. Family and future. Sicily as we have always dreamed of it.' Menfi and its vineyards between the sea and the hills, as a place of choice for growing French varieties - almost a Bolgheri of the South - is a vision that has accompanied the Planeta family since the mid-1980s." - Falstaff

"The 2017 Cabernet Franc Didacus is dark, deep and intense, with arching blue florals giving way to masses of currants, plums and licorice. It’s silky with a dense wave of mineral-tinged black fruits carried across a core of motivating acidity that lifts the expression nicely. This leaves tart wild berries, along with hints of mocha over a coating of sweet tannins, coming across as structured yet also remarkably fresh. The heat of the vintage has pushed the volume up on the 2017 Cabernet Franc Didacus and while more-classic vintages will likely outpace it in the cellar over time, the balance here is beautiful." - Vinous
