South Tyrol | Red Wine

South Tyrolean red wines have been among the classics of the wine scene for decades and are popular both at home and abroad. Germans in particular love the delicately fruity Vernatsch as well as the powerful yet supple Lagrein, and not just since the success of St. Magdalener in the early 1970s.

About 45 percent of South Tyrol's vineyard area is planted with red grape varieties, including mainly the two local varieties Vernatsch and Lagrein, but also increasingly Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Italy itself is increasingly demanding white wine from South Tyrol, while exports of white and red wines balance each other out. This is partly due to the synergistic effect of tradition and future potential of South Tyrolean red wines: they are not fashionable wines but authentic products with an independent character.

The main red grape varieties of the region are Vernatsch, Lagrein and Pinot Noir. Followed by Merlot, Cabernet and some Rose Muscat. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

"The protective hand that Bacchus has held over this small Italian region for several years now seems to continue not to tremble. The divine assistance has, of course, its very real reasons. First of all, the average quality of the wines is extraordinarily high, and at moderate and correct prices. Dumping prices, by the way, would not be appropriate at all, in view of an 'Alpine viticulture' practiced over long distances, the costs of which are correspondingly high. The background of the success is, of course, still the high reputation that South Tyrol and its winemakers enjoy and have saved unscathed through all adversities." - Slow Wine
