Blog: Sicily | White Wine

Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and offers a unique terroir ideal for growing grapes. The island has a long history in wine production and is known for its full-bodied red wines. But in recent years, the reputation of Sicilian white wine has also spread and is increasingly conquering the wine market.

The climate in Sicily is ideal for growing grapes. The island is located in a subtropical climate zone, characterized by warm summers and mild winters. Vineyards benefit from high levels of sunshine, which ripens the grapes and enhances their flavors and sugar profiles. At the same time, the cool breezes from the sea provide natural air circulation that prevents the growth of mold and fungi.

The terroir of Sicily is characterized by volcanic soil. The volcano Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in Europe, has spewed lava and ash onto the surrounding landscape over the millennia. This ash has been deposited in the soils, providing a rich mix of minerals and nutrients ideal for growing grapes. The volcanic soils are also very permeable, which helps the vines root deep into the soil to absorb rich minerals.

The grape varieties grown in Sicily are very diverse. Some of the most famous varieties are Catarratto, Grillo, Inzolia, Zibibbo and Chardonnay. Each variety has its own peculiarities and characteristics that affect the taste and aroma of the wine. Catarratto, for example, is the most widely grown grape variety on the island and produces wines with high acidity and a floral aroma. Grillo, on the other hand, is a late-ripening variety that produces wines with an intense fruitiness and a soft texture.

Another reason why Sicily is well suited for white wines is its Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are mild and humid. This climate allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly, which in turn leads to better development of flavors and higher quality wine. In addition, the sea breeze provides a pleasant cooling in the vineyards and reduces the risk of diseases and pests.

Catarratto
Catarratto is the most commonly grown white grape variety in Sicily and is usually used to produce fresh and fruity wines. The grapes have high acidity and a distinct aroma of citrus, apples and peaches.

Grillo
Grillo is another popular grape variety grown in Sicily. The grapes have a higher sugar profile than Catarratto, producing wines with higher alcohol content and richer flavors. The flavors are often marked by exotic fruits such as pineapple and mango.

Inzolia
Inzolia is another grape variety grown in Sicily. The grapes have medium to high acidity and delicate aromas of white flowers and almonds. Inzolia wines are often fresh and elegant with hints of minerality.

Zibibbo
Zibibbo is a local grape variety grown in Sicily and other islands in the Mediterranean. It is an aromatic grape often used to produce dessert wines or as an ingredient in aperitifs. Zibibbo has hints of floral and fruity aromas.

Chardonnay
The internationally known grape variety Chardonnay is also grown very successfully in Sicily. This produces balanced wines of medium acidity and hints of vanilla and butter.

In recent years, Sicilian white wine has experienced a real renaissance. More and more winemakers are using organic farming and traditional winemaking methods to produce wines of the highest quality. The wines are often very aromatic, with notes of citrus, exotic fruits and floral aromas. They are fresh and lively on the palate and make excellent accompaniments to fish, seafood and Mediterranean dishes.

Overall, it can be said that Sicily offers a perfect terroir for the production of white wine. The Mediterranean climate, volcanic soils and diverse grape varieties result. - Gerardo [TS03/23]
