Story: Storing Wine correctly | Expertise

Wine storage - how to age a good drop properly
A well-stored wine can make the difference between an average and an exceptional drinking experience. Regardless of whether you have your own wine cellar or store your wine in a city apartment - a few basic rules will ensure quality for years to come. After all, wine is not just a drink, but a sensitive natural product that reaches its peak under the right conditions.

Your own wine cellar - a paradise for wine lovers
If you have your own wine cellar, you have an invaluable advantage. With a constant temperature, controlled humidity and optimal lighting conditions, wines can be ideally matured here for many years. But even this luxury room needs to be used properly.

Temperature and humidity
The temperature should be as constant as possible between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius - 12 degrees is ideal. Fluctuations should be avoided at all costs, as they can have a negative impact on ripening. Sufficient humidity (between 70 and 80 %) is equally important to prevent the corks from drying out. Dry corks allow air to reach the wine, which leads to oxidation and loss of aroma.

Racks and storage position
Investing in suitable wine racks pays off - they not only keep things tidy, but also ensure safe and gentle storage. Bottles should always be stored horizontally so that the cork remains moist and reliably seals the wine.

Darkness is key
Direct light - especially sunlight - is harmful to wine as it can trigger chemical reactions inside the bottle. A wine cellar should therefore be dark or at least dimmed. LED lighting should also be used sparingly and only for short periods.

Keep calm
Wine likes it quiet. Vibrations - whether caused by loud music, vibrating household appliances or frequent rearranging - can have a negative effect on maturation. The perfect storage place is a quiet place where the wine is simply... is allowed to lie.

Wine storage with little space - more than just a compromise
Not everyone has the privilege of a cellar. But even in small apartments, wine storage can be realized with a little creativity.

Refrigerator - only for a short time
A conventional refrigerator is suitable for open bottles or short-term storage, but is not a permanent solution: too cold, too dry, too odorous. If you want to store wine permanently, you should consider a small wine cabinet - they are available in many sizes and price ranges.

Find constant conditions
A cool, dark place without large temperature fluctuations - perhaps a built-in cupboard, a pantry or a little-used storage niche - may be sufficient. It is important to check the temperature regularly. Wine hates temperature jumps.

Creative wine furniture and vertical solutions
There is now stylish and space-saving wine furniture that can be integrated into any living environment. From shelves under the stairs to vertical storage in the wall cupboard - wine can be stored with dignity even in confined spaces.

Quiet, please!
Even in small apartments, the storage space should be quiet. Vibrations and constant rearranging are not good conditions for a mature bottle.

Conclusion: Good storage does not mean a lack of space
Whether wine cellar or kitchen shelf - the decisive factor is how you store, not where. Temperature, humidity, light, position and rest are the five pillars of good wine storage. If you pay attention to these, you will be rewarded with wines that develop their full potential - and celebrate a little party every time you open them. Because good wine is not just a matter of taste, but also a question of respect for the product. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
