Story: Lugana | Spumante

Lugana Spumante is an exquisite sparkling wine that comes from the Lombardy region, a picturesque area on the southern shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy. This region is known for its excellent white wines, especially those made from the Trebbiano di Lugana grape, which is also used to produce Lugana Spumante.

History of Lugana Spumante
The Lugana wine region has a long tradition dating back to Roman times. The potential of this region for viticulture was already recognized back then. The special climatic conditions, influenced by Lake Garda, as well as the mineral-rich soils of clayey loam and limestone, offer ideal conditions for viticulture. Although the history of Lugana Spumante is not as old as that of the still Lugana wines, it is still deeply rooted in the region's tradition. Sparkling wine production in Lugana only began in the 20th century, but quickly gained recognition for its quality and unique character.

Production method
Lugana Spumante is mainly produced using the Charmat method, also known as Metodo Martinotti. This method, which is often used for the production of Prosecco, makes it possible to produce fresh and fruity sparkling wines. The wine undergoes a second fermentation in large pressure tanks instead of in the bottle, which results in a finer perlage and a light, sparkling character.

However, some producers also choose the traditional method of bottle fermentation, similar to the Champenoise method, in which the second fermentation takes place in the bottle. This method gives the Lugana Spumante greater complexity and finesse. Both methods have their advantages and contribute to the diversity of Lugana Spumante.

Sensory characteristics
Lugana Spumante is characterized by its brilliant straw-yellow color and a fine, persistent perlage. On the nose, it develops an intense bouquet with aromas of citrus fruit, green apple, pear and often a hint of white flowers and almond. On the palate, it is fresh and lively, with a pleasant acidity and a harmonious balance that makes it an ideal aperitif or accompaniment to light dishes and seafood.

Conclusion
Lugana Spumante is a sparkling wine that perfectly captures the uniqueness of the Lugana region and the quality of the Trebbiano di Lugana grape. With its rich history and careful production methods, it offers an incomparable taste experience that will delight both connoisseurs and newcomers to the world of sparkling wine. Whether as a festive aperitif or as an elegant accompaniment to a fine meal, Lugana Spumante is always an excellent choice. - Gerardo [TS08/24]
