Basilicata | Wine Region
Aglianico del Vulture - The red pride of Basilicata
In the heart of southern Italy, amid the dramatic, rugged landscape of Basilicata, rises the ancient volcano Monte Vulture. It is here that one of the region's greatest wine specialties thrives: Aglianico del Vulture. This red wine is not only considered the calling card of Lucanian viticulture, but is also one of Italy's most long-lived and characterful reds.

Origin, terroir, and climate
The vineyards of Aglianico del Vulture are located on the slopes of the extinct volcano Monte Vulture, at altitudes of around 200 to 700 meters above sea level. These volcanic soils, rich in minerals such as potassium and iron, give the vines a very special character. At the same time, the vineyards benefit from large temperature fluctuations between day and night—hot days meet cool nights—which helps the grapes retain their freshness and acidity. This terroir, combined with a Mediterranean climate, creates the ideal basis for an intense and long-lasting wine.

Grape variety and wine type
Aglianico del Vulture is made from pure Aglianico grapes. This is a late-ripening, thick-skinned grape variety known for its strong structure, high acidity, and dense tannins. Depending on the quality level, the wine is aged for different lengths of time: the basic version of the DOC is aged for at least one year, while Riserva versions are sometimes aged for five years or more, including in wooden barrels.

Taste, aromas, and aging potential
In the glass, Aglianico del Vulture often displays a deep ruby red color with garnet red reflections. Complex aromas unfold on the nose: dark fruits such as black cherry or plum mingle with notes of leather, smoke, undergrowth, and spices. With age, balsamic and tobacco-like nuances accumulate, giving the wine depth and finesse. On the palate, it is powerful, with robust tannins and lively acidity that give the wine a distinctive structure. Thanks to these characteristics, it can age for many years - the more sophisticated varieties in particular can be stored for ten to twenty years or more.

History and significance
The roots of Aglianico del Vulture go back a long way: the Aglianico grape variety probably came to Italy with Greek settlers - the name is derived from “Hellenico,” which refers to its Greek origin. In 1971, the wine was officially recognized as Aglianico del Vulture DOC. Since 2010, there has also been the higher classification Aglianico del Vulture Superiore DOCG, an indication of the outstanding quality and aging potential of these wines. The winegrowing tradition around Monte Vulture is strongly influenced by its volcanic history - many wineries still use natural caves and underground tunnels in the volcanic slopes to store their wines.

An outstanding producer: Elena Fucci
Elena Fucci is a particularly noteworthy winemaker in this region. Her Titolo Aglianico del Vulture DOC wine comes from an old vineyard on the slopes of Monte Vulture, with vines that are over 70 years old in some cases. Aged in French barriques, this wine has an elegant structure without masking the natural power and minerality of the Aglianico grape. Its dense ruby red color, pronounced fruit aromas, and balanced tannin structure make it an impressive expression of this special region.

Cultural context and local characteristics
Basilicata itself is a small, often underestimated wine region. With only a few thousand hectares of vineyards, it is one of the smallest in Italy, but the proportion of Aglianico vines here is exceptionally high. The location on Monte Vulture and the volcanic soils give the wine an unmistakable identity and make it a true ambassador for the region. Furthermore, Aglianico del Vulture is often referred to by enthusiasts and connoisseurs as the “Barolo of the South” - a recognition of its structural potential and longevity.

Conclusion
Aglianico del Vulture is a passionate, complex, and long-lived red wine that reflects the soul of Basilicata in a bottle. Its origins on the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture, the ancient Aglianico grape variety, and careful aging make it a masterpiece of Lucanian viticulture. Thanks to producers like Elena Fucci, who combine tradition with precision, this wine has achieved international renown. Those who want to experience Basilicata in a glass will find Aglianico del Vulture to be a profound and powerful companion. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
