Berta Distilleries | Piedmont

The Berta Distillery is an outstanding example of Italian craftsmanship and deep-rooted family history in the heart of Piedmont. Originally founded on viticulture and agriculture, the business developed after World War II into one of Italy's most renowned grappa distilleries. Since 1947, the Berta family has been distilling high-quality pomace brandies in Mombaruzzo near Asti with an exceptional balance of tradition, technology, and patience—always in close connection with their homeland and the surrounding wine country.

The vineyards of Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not only shape the landscape but also Berta's philosophy of quality: fresh, healthy pomace from Italian grape varieties is at the heart of every grappa edition. The distillery, now located in a modern facility on the Roccanivo hill, welcomes visitors for traditional tours, tastings, and even interactive experiences. The range includes a variety of grappas - from classic, young distillates to long-aged Riserva editions - whose diversity and depth impressively demonstrate the fine art of distillation. A special highlight of the distillery is the legendary Riserva Del Fondatore / Paolo Berta 75 Anni, a limited anniversary edition that combines decades of experience and aging expertise. - Gerardo [TS01/26]

With intuition Paolo has founded the Distilleria Berta, his Enology studies helped him. Curiously, the first appreciations of his distillates came from Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Australia, but not from the surrounding area. In 1956 was born Gianfranco and in 1960 Enrico Berta, the current owners. The first barrique barrels found their way to Berta and a new chapter in the refinement of grappa in wood was opened. The two brothers achieved a worldwide breakthrough with the long-term storage of marc spirits in French oak. The completion of the distillates by aging them for ten years or more found great acceptance and became the trademark of Distilleria Berta.

The modern Distilleria Berta in Mombaruzzo started its operations in 2002. In its previous premises in and around Nice Monferrato, Piedmont, it was becoming increasingly crowded. Distilleria Berta was founded there in 1947, where Francesco Berta was born in 1866. Like all children of that time in the countryside, Francesco Berta had to work in the vineyards and wine cellars. Wisely, the then 22-year-old took care of the family's customers and business , thus laying the foundations of today's business. He also married his wife Erminia Barbera at the age of 22, and their children Michele and Giovanni were born. At that time the firstborn Giovanni was destined to work in the farm together with his father. Son Michele had to leave the farm and decided to become a pharmacist. - Gerardo [TS01/26]
