Calabria | White Wine

The 35,000 hectares of vineyards, only about a third of which are actually used, are home to 90% red grape varieties that are exported worldwide. Calabria, the Italian name of the region, is known primarily for its high-alcohol red wines. The most important grape variety is the red Gaglioppo, which is grown on about a quarter of the vineyard area. It is followed by Greco Nero and Greco Bianco. Other red grape varieties common in Calabria are Barbera, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Calabrese (Nero d'Avola), Chardonnay, Malvasia, Montonico, Moscato, Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Zibibbo. However, as in almost all wine-growing regions of the world, some international varieties have found their way into Calabria's vineyards. Although these varieties are far from being able to compete with the native varieties in terms of area, they do produce good results and contribute significantly to a general increase in quality. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

"The leading role in the wine industry of Calabria continues to play Cirò and its surroundings, as it has for years." - Gambero Rosso
