Lazio | Wine region

Wine growing in Lazio has a long tradition and is closely linked to the history of the region. Between the Apennines and the Tyrrhenian coast, there are rolling hills and fertile plains that offer ideal conditions for growing various grape varieties. Calcareous soils, a Mediterranean climate, and proximity to the sea create a balanced interplay of sun, warmth, and fresh breezes, giving the grapes a special structure, freshness, and aromatic diversity.

Lazio is best known for its indigenous varieties such as Cesanese, Malvasia Puntinata, and Grechetto, which are typical of the region. Winemakers combine traditional knowledge with modern cellar technology to produce wines that both reflect local identity and appeal internationally. Wines from Lazio are characterized by their elegance, balanced acidity, and ability to convey the terroir in every bottle, making the region an exciting destination for wine lovers.

Already from the Etruscans learned the Latins, the natives of Lazio, the viticulture. From here come such world-famous wines as Frascati, which was one of the first Italian wines exported to Germany. Shrouded in legend is the Est! Est!!! Est!!! di Montefiascone, which the servant of a cardinal is said to have discovered as a taster during a trip to Rome. Among the white varieties, Trebbiano and Malvasia predominate, while among the reds one finds Cesanese, Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Merlot, Ciliegiolo and also Cabernet. - Gerardo [12/25]
