Story: Aleatico | Grape variety

A vine with history and character
Aleatico is an ancient, aromatic red wine variety that is mainly native to southern Italy - particularly Puglia, Elba, Lazio and parts of Tuscany. Its exact origin is not clear, but many experts suspect it is closely related to the Muscat family. It may even be a natural mutation of Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. What is certain is that this vine has a long history and has been used for centuries to make very special wines.
The specialist for sweets
Aleatico is particularly famous for its role in sweet wines, which have intense aromas and a seductive scent of roses, red fruits, dried cherries and spices. Probably the best-known representative is the Aleatico di Portoferraio Passito DOCG from the island of Elba, where the grapes are dried after harvesting to concentrate the sugar content. The result is a powerful, dark dessert wine with a lush body, fine spice and a long finish - a true meditation drink.
These wines are perfect at the end of a meal, with chocolate desserts, mature cheese or simply as a solo artist in a glass. Once you've tasted it, you won't forget it in a hurry.
Rosato and sparkling wine - the light side of Aleatico
In addition to the intense passito wines, Aleatico also shows its playful, fresh side: In recent years, it has been increasingly vinified for rosato wines (rosés). These impress with their aromatic fruitiness, floral notes and pleasantly lively acidity. Puglia in particular produces light, easy-drinking rosés that are perfect for Mediterranean cuisine and summer days.
There are also a few sparkling wines from Aleatico, which are produced either as spumante or frizzante. Here, too, the focus is on fragrance and aroma - a sparkling experience that stands out from the usual Prosecco varieties.
An insider tip for explorers
Although it can certainly compete with prominent grape varieties such as Moscato or Brachetto in terms of character, Aleatico is largely unknown outside Italy. This is precisely what makes it an exciting insider tip for wine lovers. Anyone who is fed up with standard wines and has the courage to try new flavors will discover a fascinating alternative in Aleatico.
Whether sweet, rosé or sparkling - Aleatico stands for wines with personality, emotion and the unmistakable scent of the south. A vine that deserves more attention.
Tip: If you want to try Aleatico, you should get yourself a bottle of Aleatico Passito dell'Elba or an Apulian Rosato - and simply let yourself in for a southern Italian seduction. - Gerardo [TS04/25]
