Story: Barbera | Grape variety
Page: 1/2
The Barbera grape variety is a northern Italian icon and is one of the flagships of Piedmont, where it shapes the wine world together with the Nebbiolo and Dolcetto varieties. Particularly known for the noble Barbera d'Alba and Barbera d'Asti appellations, Barbera is prized for its fresh, colorful red wines with fine acidity and a comparatively gentle tannin content. As a multi-faceted variety, it is native to several regions in Italy - from Emilia-Romagna to the southern growing regions of Apulia, Campania and even the islands of Sicily and Sardinia.
The Barbera nera grape delights winemakers and wine lovers with its ability to produce lively, fruity wines. Its soft, velvety tannin profile sets it apart from Nebbiolo, the often tannic star of Piedmont, and makes Barbera an excellent partner for both cuvées and single-varietal wines. Italy's growing focus on single-varietal labels is giving Barbera wines increasing international attention.
In its youth, Barbera is a lively cherry red with a fresh cherry aroma that stands out from the often more austere Nebbiolo with its roundness and silky tannins. Barrels lend the grape variety additional elegance: Barbera gains depth and complexity as it matures, with the tart cherry often developing into darker notes and subtle wood tannins harmoniously rounding off the balance. A fine plum note also often emerges - powerful and round, similar to the characteristics of a Merlot, but closer to Mourvèdre at its core. In warm climates, the challenge is to avoid over-ripening, as Barbera otherwise tends towards dull, prune-like aromas and loses its typical cherry freshness.
Barbera is therefore much more than just the “little brother” of Nebbiolo. As a grape variety that combines both elegance and expressiveness, it brings the terroir of Italy - particularly that of Piedmont - to the glass in a sensual, fruity way. - Gerardo [TS11/24]
