Librandi | Calabria
Librandi, a pioneer of Calabrian viticulture, is still the only winery in the region with an international reputation. Located in Cirò Marina, the family winery specializes in the region's classics and relies on the local Gaglioppo grape variety, which forms the basis for all of the winery's red wines and rosés. In addition, Librandi is increasingly using international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon to give the wines a special complexity and modern character. In addition to preserving traditional varieties, the winery is committed to recultivating old indigenous grape varieties such as Mantonico, Magliocco and Greco Bianco, which underlines the diversity of the Calabrian terroir.
Since 2008, Librandi has been working with the 'I Vignaioli di Cirò' winegrowers' association to preserve the originality and tradition of Cirò wines. Despite the spirit of innovation, the winery remains true to the classic style of Calabria, which is expressed in wines such as the Cirò Bianco, Critone and Rosato Terre Lontane. The pride of the house, however, is the Gravello, a groundbreaking cuvée of Gaglioppo and Cabernet Sauvignon, which was the first Calabrian wine to receive the coveted 'Three Glasses' from Gambero Rosso. This top wine is exemplary of Librandi's philosophy, which harmoniously combines tradition and modernity and elevates Calabrian wine to the international stage. - Gerardo [TS01/25]
"Without the brothers Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi Calabrian viticulture is no longer imaginable. For 60 years now they have been coping with the local difficulties with growing success, never leaving the quality track, especially in the vineyards. Their favorite objects of research and experimentation have been the native vines, of which they have given a tangible show especially to the trio of Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Mantonico. Ciròviticulture has thus reached a new position with a promising future." - Slow Wine

Calabria: A region with a rich heritage and vibrant wine culture
Calabria, once colonized by the ancient Greeks, is today a place where history and culture meet in an impressive way. The former occupiers not only left behind architectural masterpieces, but also brought with them valuable knowledge and wealth, which laid the foundations for viticulture. The fusion of ancient civilization, fertile soils and local traditions created a melting pot of art, gastronomy and folklore. Today, Calabria is a region that proudly preserves its past while looking to the future.
Librandi: a monument to Calabrian viticulture
With 230 hectares of vineyards, the Librandi winery is synonymous with Calabrian quality viticulture. The main grape variety, Gaglioppo, which accounts for 60% of total production, is complemented by indigenous varieties such as Greco Bianco, Magliocco and Mantonico. Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi, the brothers behind this successful family business, were instrumental in the development of the winery. From the first bottling to the introduction of modern winegrowing practices and the establishment of the renowned Gravello, they have managed the business with foresight.
International success and tradition in harmony
Librandi is the only Calabrian winery that also enjoys great success abroad, particularly in the USA, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. Production is divided equally between exports and the domestic market. The focus is on the three Cirò varieties - Rosso, Bianco and Rosato - as well as specialties such as Gravello, Duca San Felice, Critone, Melissa DOC and the newer Efeso. The loss of Antonio Librandi in 2012 marked a painful turning point for the family and the entire wine world, which honored him as a visionary and pioneer of Calabrian viticulture.
Modernization and pioneering wines
Since the 1980s, the Librandi brothers have fundamentally modernized the winery. New grape varieties such as Sauvignon and Chardonnay were introduced, which today represent the fresh and expressive white wine Critone. The local Gaglioppo grape, together with the international Cabernet Sauvignon, forms the basis for the Cirò Rosso and Rosato. These wines have quickly made a name for themselves as elegant and characterful representatives of the southern Italian wine world. The oenologist Severino Garofano made a special contribution, raising the quality of the wines to a new level.
Gravello and new paths
A milestone in the history of Librandi was the construction of a new barrel cellar in which the Gravello, a cuvée of Gaglioppo and Cabernet Sauvignon, matures in barriques. Gravello is a symbol of the harmony between tradition and modernity. Le Pasulle, a dessert wine made from the rare Mantonico grape, also stands for the winery's innovative spirit. Despite these advances, Librandi remains true to its roots and offers high-quality, modern products at fair prices with its Cirò wines.
Calabria and Librandi: a shared vision
Calabria and the Librandi winery stand for the combination of past and future. With their love for the region and incomparable quality standards, the Librandi family has brought Calabrian viticulture onto the international stage. Their wines tell stories of tradition, innovation and a deep connection with the land. - Gerardo [TS01/25]
