Librandi | Calabria
Librandi - central star of Calabrian viticulture and to this day the only winery in the region to enjoy international renown. Located in Cirò Marina, the winery is well managed and has always specialized in the classics of the region - the Cirò wines. The basis for this is the local grape variety Gaglioppo, which underlies all the red wines and Roses of the winery. Not only since the Gravello, international grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon are also increasingly used to give the wines a special polish. In addition, Librandi operates various experimental vineyards and is concerned about the reclamation of old grape varieties such as Mantonico, Magliocco and Greco Bianco.
Since 2008, with the 'I Vignaioli di Cirò' an association of wine producers was created to preserve and continue the originality and tradition of Cirò wines. To this day, Librandi has remained faithful to the classic wine style of Calabria, without being closed to innovations. This is clearly demonstrated by the best-selling Cirò Bianco, Critone and the Rosato Terre Lontane. However, the wine that best expresses Librandi's forward-looking philosophy to this day is the house's top wine: Gravello. A modern cuvee of Gaglioppo (autochthonous) and Cabernet Sauvignon - the first 'three glasses wine' of Calabria (Gambero Rosso) and a piece of Calabrian history made wine. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
"Without the brothers Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi Calabrian viticulture is no longer imaginable. For 60 years now they have been coping with the local difficulties with growing success, never leaving the quality track, especially in the vineyards. Their favorite objects of research and experimentation have been the native vines, of which they have given a tangible show especially to the trio of Gaglioppo, Magliocco and Mantonico. Ciròviticulture has thus reached a new position with a promising future." - Slow Wine

Once a Greek colony, the region in the south of Italy is now known as Calabria. The occupiers of that time brought with them some knowledge and wealth, leaving behind an area filled with history and culture. From this culture, in conjunction with the fertile soils emerged the viticulture in Calabria as we know it today. From the remains of the ancient civilization and the traditions of the locals, a melting pot of art, gastronomy and folklore was born: Calabria, a land full of love and respect for the past, always looking to the rest of the world.
The Librandi winery, with its 230 hectares of vineyards, is considered a monument of Calabrian viticulture and is still the only winery with notable success abroad. The main grape variety, Gaglioppo, accounts for the lion's share of production (60%), followed by Greco Bianco, Magliocco and Mantonico. The success of the winery is mainly due to the work of the two brothers Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi: they are responsible for the entire development of the winery, from the first bottling to the development of Gravello and the planting of experimental vineyards. Today, production is concentrated on the three Cirò versions (Rosso, Bianco and Rosato) and on special varieties such as Gravello, Duca San Felice, Critone, Melissa DOC and the more recent Efeso. Currently, just under half of the vineyards produced are exported abroad (USA, Germany, Japan, Switzerland), while the other half are sold in Italy. In October 2012, during a trip to Germany by Nicodemo Librandi, his brother Antonio passed away at the age of 80. The death of the studied architect, winemaker and entrepreneur was received with great sympathy by both professionals and wine lovers.
Antonio and Nicodemo Librandi, brothers and owners of the winery Librandi in Cirò Marina, from time immemorial one of the great protagonists of the Denomination of Origin Cirò, have modernized their business from scratch since the mid-eighties, both renovating the cellars and introducing new varieties in the vineyards. Sauvignon and Chardonnay in particular were planted, and from this cuvee is now produced a fresh and pleasing white wine, Critone. Later, the international success grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon was added, which together with the native Gaglioppo pigeon forms the basis for the Cirò Rosso and the Rosato. The Cirò is an elegant wine, full of character, which already in the first vintages produced was able to secure a place in the forefront of the important wines of southern Italy. Much of the credit for this also goes to Severino Garofano, who has once again distinguished himself here as one of the most important Önologists of the South.
The construction of a new barrel cellar for the aging of Gravello in barrique barrels, is only a prelude to upcoming new wines, the first of which, Le Pasulle, is a fascinating version of the rare meditation and dessert wine Mantonico Bianco. But we should not forget the classics of the winery, the various Cirò, clean and modern wines, like all Librandi products, which are also characterized by very correct prices. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
"The Librandi brothers have certainly not made their task easy in the last five years. Regardless of all the economic problems, they invest time and money in research, clone selection and in the protection of species of the native Calabrian vine. In this way, Nicodemo and Tonino are creating an almost otherworldly leap in quality." - Gambero Rosso
