Cortese: The noble white from Piedmont
The Cortese grape variety is one of the most important white grape varieties in northern Italy and is particularly at home in southern Piedmont. It is best known for the DOCG wine Gavi, which is synonymous with elegant, fresh white wines from the province of Alessandria. Cortese is a traditional variety with a clear profile, characterized by purity, fine structure and a remarkable interplay of fruit and freshness.
Origin and history
The history of Cortese goes back a long way - the first written mentions date back to the 17th century. The grape variety found ideal conditions to establish itself, particularly around the town of Gavi. Over the centuries, Cortese became the leading grape variety in the region and was awarded the highest Italian designation of origin, Gavi di Gavi DOCG, in 1998. Its resistance to disease and its ability to retain freshness even in warmer years make it a highly valued variety for winegrowers.
Growing area and terroir
Cortese is grown almost exclusively in Piedmont, with the main focus on the Gavi DOCG zone. The hilly landscape with calcareous clay soils and moderate altitudes offers ideal conditions for the vine. The proximity to the Ligurian Sea brings a light breeze and moderates extreme temperatures - an advantage that has a positive effect on the balance of the grapes. The terroir gives the Cortese wine its typical clarity, freshness and mineral depth.
Vinification and style
As a rule, Cortese is vinified in stainless steel tanks in order to preserve its lively acidity and fine fruit. Wood usually plays a subordinate role in vinification, although some producers also experiment with barrique ageing. However, the focus is clearly on a straightforward, pure style. The wines are dry, light to medium-bodied and are characterized by a balanced ratio of fruit, acidity and delicate body.
Aroma and character
A typical Cortese is pale straw yellow with greenish reflections and offers a fresh bouquet of green apple, citrus fruit, white flowers and the occasional hint of almonds. It is elegant on the palate, with a fine, almost salty minerality and an invigorating acidity structure. This style makes it particularly suitable as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to light dishes - ideal with fish, seafood, antipasti or mild goat's cheese.
Cortese: An expression of Piedmontese finesse
The Cortese grape variety stands for fine, clear and accessible white wines with a regional character. Its ability to please both when young and to gain depth with a short period of maturation in the bottle makes it a versatile choice for quality-conscious connoisseurs. As Gavi in particular, Cortese embodies the best that Piedmontese white wine has to offer - authentic, precise and remarkably elegant.
At a time when fresh, terroir-driven white wines are increasingly appreciated, Cortese remains a reliable force and a figurehead of northern Italian viticulture. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
