Kellerei Tramin - South Tyrolean Premium Wines with Alpine Character

Tradition and Innovation Since 1898
Kellerei Tramin looks back on a long and eventful history. Founded in 1898 by Christian Schrott, a member of the Austrian parliament and parish priest from Vienna, it is one of the oldest wine cooperatives in South Tyrol. Today, it unites around 160 member families who collectively cultivate approximately 270 hectares of vineyards. This close connection between tradition and modernity continues to shape the philosophy of the winery to this day. A significant milestone was the merger with the Neumarkt winery in 1971, which expanded the range to include grape varieties such as Lagrein, Cabernet, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Blanc. Following a landslide in Tramin, the reconstruction offered the opportunity to install state-of-the-art grape processing facilities and a climate-controlled wine cellar. Since 1992, a modern vinotheque within the winery’s buildings has also invited guests to taste and linger.

Gewürztraminer - The Heart of the Winery
The heart of Kellerei Tramin is the Gewürztraminer, a grape variety celebrated worldwide for its aromatic diversity and expressive character. Particularly noteworthy is the “Nussbaumer,” Italy’s most awarded Gewürztraminer, which regularly receives top honors. Another highlight is the “Terminum,” a noble sweet late harvest wine made from carefully selected, botrytized grapes, renowned for its complexity and elegance. Both wines reflect the passion, craftsmanship, and decades of experience of the winemaking families.

Epokale - A Gewürztraminer of the Highest Order
With “Epokale,” Kellerei Tramin has created a Gewürztraminer that sets new standards. The grapes are sourced from vines over 20 years old near the historic Nussbaumerhof in Tramin. After careful harvesting, the wine matures for seven years in an abandoned mining tunnel in Ridnaun, at over 2,000 meters altitude. There, constant temperatures of 11°C and high humidity provide ideal conditions for exceptional aging. The 2009 vintage was the first Italian white wine to receive the highest rating of 100 Parker points. With its intense aromas of rose petals, exotic fruits, and spices, as well as its harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity, “Epokale” is considered a true masterpiece.

Troy - The Alpine Chardonnay
Another flagship wine is “Troy,” the alpine interpretation of a Chardonnay. The grapes grow at 500 to 550 meters above sea level on calcareous gravel and clay soils. After whole-cluster pressing, fermentation takes place in barriques, followed by 11 months of aging on the fine lees and another 22 months in stainless steel tanks. The result is a Chardonnay that delights with aromas of citrus fruits, tropical notes, chamomile, and delicate roasted nuances. Freshness, minerality, and elegance make “Troy” a prime example of the high quality and alpine character of Kellerei Tramin.

Diversity and Quality in the Portfolio
But the range of Kellerei Tramin offers even more. In addition to the aforementioned flagship wines, it includes a wide selection of other high-quality wines. These include “Stoan,” a refined cuvée of four white grape varieties, the characterful “Unterebner” Pinot Grigio, the elegant “Maglen” Pinot Noir, and the powerful “Urban” Lagrein. Special attention is also given to Vernatsch - the best wines of this traditional South Tyrolean variety are marketed under the names “Freisingerhof” and “Hexenbichler.” This diversity reflects the passion, commitment, and craftsmanship of the winemaking families behind the winery.

Conclusion
Kellerei Tramin uniquely combines tradition, innovation, and the highest standards of quality. With wines like “Epokale” and “Troy,” it continually sets new benchmarks and enjoys an excellent international reputation. The close collaboration with the member families and the respectful approach to nature make the winery a role model for sustainable viticulture. A visit to Tramin is a rewarding experience for any wine lover, offering a direct encounter with the fascinating world of South Tyrolean wine culture. - Gerardo [TS05/25]

"They say that Kellerei Tramin rhymes with Gewürztraminer. It could be true, because the Epokale V.T. and the Nussbaumer represent the absolute Italian pinnacle of this typology, but it would also risk disparaging the great work of Willi Stürz, the great cellar master, as modest. The entire range of the Tramin winery is of impressive down-to-earth and defined style, for example the Pinot Grigio Unterebner, a difficult grape variety, but this one reaches absolute top quality." - Daniele Cernilli (Doctor Wine)
