Vintage | 2020

Good, storable wine from Italy always bears a vintage. This gives information about the harvest year of the grapes used in the wine. The grape harvest usually takes place at the beginning of autumn and ranges from the end of August to mid-October. Due to the vinification that follows, the bottled wine is available on the market the following year at the earliest. The situation is different with wines that undergo further aging in wooden barrels, which is usually followed by further extensive aging in the bottle. These wines can be stored much longer and bear their vintage not as a shelf life, but as a kind of seal of quality. Older vintages of high-quality wines (especially red wines) are traded as rarities, which make connoisseurs' hearts beat faster. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

One bottle each of Bolgheri Sassicaia vintages 2018, 2019 and 2020 in a high quality wooden box with hinged lid:

Description Sassicaia 2020: The harvest began in the first week of September with the grapes from the younger vineyards, starting with the Cabernet Franc, then continued with the Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyards at lower altitudes and ended in the last week of September with the grapes from the hills above 300 meters above sea level.

The grapes were selected using a sorting table to eliminate impurities and imperfections. Gentle pressing and careful destemming of the grapes to preserve the integrity of the berries and avoid excessive transfer of tannins. Alcoholic fermentation was completed at the end of October and took place regularly and at controlled temperatures. Frequent racking and pumping over allowed for excellent aroma extraction and fresh acidity in the musts. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel tanks at the end of November. In the first week of December, the wine was racked into oak barriques after frequent decanting to clean the musts.

At the end of malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in barriques with 45% new wood, 45% first passage and 10% second passage. After more than 25 months of ageing in wood, the Sassicaia 2020 was transferred to steel tanks before final blending and bottling. It is then refined in the bottle before being released onto the market.

Description Sassicaia 2019: With its purist purity, the 2019 Sassicaia is close to the model of the perfect Cabernet: even after 51 vintages, Tenuta San Guido remains true to its roots and creates a dynamic and finesse-rich Maremma Cabernet that walks entirely on the paths of the great vintages. Sublime and multifaceted, the Sassicaia 51 still sees itself as a Tuscan super Tuscan blueprint, for which once even its own DOC was created.

Description Sassicaia 2018: the red wine icon of Italy turns 50: fifty vintages have passed from 1968 to 2018 and fifty editions of this pioneering Super Tuscan blueprint have been created. Yet the 2018 vintage could not be more typical: Balanced and rich in finesse, this anniversary Sassicaia presents itself as an archetype for which even its own DOC was once created. - Gerardo [TS07/21]

The wine has a velvety soft texture and a pleasant, enveloping mouthfeel that invites a second sip. Its dense yet elegant tannic structure carries the tasty, beautifully persistent finish." - Olga Fusari (Kellermeisterin Ornellaia)
