Historical grape varieties of Italy | Classic

In addition to internationally known and appreciated grape varieties, numerous indigenous (autochthonous) grape varieties are cultivated throughout Italy. Despite their value, some of them were ignored for a long time and almost forgotten. In recent decades, Italian winegrowers and wineries have increasingly begun to recover this treasure trove of vines.

Among these autochthonous varieties are also some historical grape varieties that were previously overlooked and are therefore almost extinct today. Recent research has shown that these varieties have great potential, which has not yet been fully explored due to a lack of technology and studies.

These include both red and white grape varieties, such as Pecorino or Vernaccia Nera. These grape varieties are of high quality and are also highly resistant to pests and diseases. Another plus point is the fact that some of the 'forgotten' grape varieties (such as Garofanata) produce less alcoholic wines than the international Chardonnay grape variety, for example - and with a comparable aroma. The Italian winegrowing landscape is gradually revealing its secrets, and artisan winemakers are striving to make these secrets palatable. - Gerardo [TS03/24]
