Ripasso | Classic

Along with the classic Valpolicella, Ripasso is one of the most famous red wines from the Veneto. Valpolicella in particular has had a checkered history, sometimes standing between the consumer and the really good versions of this wine. Valpolicella is always a light, fruity and full-bodied red wine that has character and refinement. Valpolicella made by hand is best, which is in stark contrast to industrially made products.

The Ripasso has become known as the 'Amarone Light Version' and is slightly more concentrated and heavier than the Valpolicella Classico. The name already hints at the production process: For the little word 'ripassare' means something like 'repetition' or 'renewed passage'. In this process, dried grape skins from Amarone production are added to the already fermented Valpolicella wine, which triggers a renewed, second fermentation due to the ingredients they contain. The grapes, as well as the additional fermentation process, enrich the Valpolicella with tannins, extracts and colorants. This gives the wine more depth, color, body and also a higher alcohol content. The resulting Valpolicella Ripasso has some of the coveted, characterful qualities of Amarone della Valpolicella - and is also usually much less expensive. - Gerardo [TS06/23]

"That the Amarone is an effective advertising medium for the region has been proven for years by numerous solid top companies. Excellent results have also been achieved in Valpolicella, with the Marion winery becoming increasingly prominent." - Gambero Rosso
