Story: Erbhof Unterganzner | Alto Adige
Page: 1/1
Historical depth and family heritage
The Unterganzner estate has been owned by the Mayr family since 1629 and is considered a prime example of a “family estate” in South Tyrol—meaning that the estate has been continuously farmed by the family for many generations. Today, Josephus and Barbara Mayr run the business with passion; since 2018, their children Katharina and Josef, the eleventh generation, have also been actively involved in the winery. Bottling takes place entirely on site, so that the journey from grape to bottle remains entirely in the hands of the family.
Terroir and site characteristics
The Unterganznerhof vineyards are located on the eastern edge of the Bolzano basin, where the Eggentaler Bach stream flows into the Eisack river. The soil is complex: alluvial deposits meet porphyritic rock weathering, resulting in a very mineral, deep soil structure. These soils warm up quickly in spring, are well aerated, and drain excellently—ideal conditions for healthy and ripe grape development. In addition, a historic water wall dating from 1779 protects the farm from possible flooding.
Philosophy & vineyard practices
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at Unterganznerhof: we do not use artificial fertilizers or aggressive weed control methods. Instead, the family focuses on selective care, natural regeneration, and adapted pergola cultivation for Lagrein. This ancient form of pruning has been modified to enable high vine density per hectare and low yields at the same time. This keeps the vines healthy and ensures that the vineyard retains its long-term productivity.
Wine portfolio and grape varieties
Unterganzner offers a wide range of wines. White wines such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Kerner come from the independent Platt & Pignat vineyards. Among the rosés, Lagrein Kretzer plays an important role, while red wines such as St. Magdalener (Vernatsch with Lagrein) are offered in classic and “classic” versions, as well as Pinot Noir. Lagrein is particularly significant, both in its basic form and as a Riserva. Other wines include an intense Cabernet Riserva and a rare dessert wine (“Passito Marie Josephine”).
Special highlight: Lamarein
A real flagship product of the winery is Lamarein, a very rare Lagrein wine made from late-harvested and partially dried grapes. After harvesting, the berries are carefully processed and aged for many months, partly in concrete and partly in wood. The result is a dense, deep wine with aromas of wild berries, dark chocolate, leather, and spice—a wine of great personality and rarity.
Significance for the region & outlook
The Unterganzner estate is a living bridge between history and modernity in South Tyrolean viticulture. With its naturally cultivated vineyards, centuries-old family tradition, and clear commitment to quality, it contributes significantly to the character of the region. Looking ahead, the next generation around Katharina and Josef Mayr could continue the history through further vineyard development, experimental cultivation methods, or small batches, while at the same time making the wines even more refined. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
