The beginnings of Melini
The history of the Melini winery dates back to 1705, when the Florentine Melini family, wealthy entrepreneurs from the Val di Sieve, began to devote themselves to wine production. Even then, the classic Tuscan table wine “Vermiglio” was produced and traded in barrels—a logistical challenge that the house tackled with innovative solutions. With the support of respected experts of the time, such as Cosimo Villifranchi, processes were developed to ensure the shelf life and quality of the wines. Melini distinguished itself early on through technical progress: around 1830, a process corresponding to the principle of pasteurization later described by Louis Pasteur was used for the first time to stabilize the wines.

The winery took a decisive step forward in 1860 when Adolfo Laborel Melini introduced the “fiasco strapeso” - a sturdy glass bottle with a cork stopper. This allowed the wines to be transported safely and new markets to be opened up. Success was not long in coming: in 1877, Melini received a gold medal from the Florence Chamber of Commerce for the largest and most reliable export of Tuscan wines. This laid the foundation for the winery's role as one of the most important ambassadors of Chianti in the world.

Development in the 20th century
After World War I, the Melini winery first passed into the ownership of Buitoni, then Martini & Rossi, and finally Gruppo Italiano Vini. With this transition, the winery's headquarters moved to the Chianti Classico zone in Gaggiano near Poggibonsi, where a modern wine cellar was built between 1970 and 1974. It was built into the slope of a hill and laid out on four levels to enable vinification according to the cru principle. Each parcel is vinified separately to bring out the character of the individual sites to the fullest. In this way, Melini combines historical heritage with technical precision and a consistent focus on quality.

To this day, the company's philosophy is based on a balance between innovative spirit and a deep connection to the terroir. Melini owns valuable vineyards in the best locations in Chianti and Chianti Classico. This diversity of locations and exposures allows it to produce distinctive wines with strong character that reflect the typical expression of the region.

Quality and significance
Melini stands for three key achievements: the winery played a decisive role in the global success of Chianti, was one of the first in Italy to implement the cru concept, and is still one of the best-known Chianti brands worldwide today. With more than 300 years of history and over a century of international market leadership, Melini combines tradition and progress in an exemplary manner.

The winery is considered a symbol of Tuscan viticulture, conscious of its past but always looking ahead. The combination of experience, innovative strength, and a clear quality philosophy makes Melini one of the most important names in Chianti and a winery that claims to represent the best of the region. - Gerardo [TS10/25]
