Story: Nanfro | Sicily

The Nanfro family winery has a long history and enjoys a high reputation in Sicily. This is because viticulture in Vittoria has always been a tradition, although it was practiced as mass cultivation until the 1950s. However, the explosive qualitative development of Nero d'Avola shows that the island is populated with a variety of potential and indigenous grape varieties. Private investors and large wineries from the mainland in particular have recently become aware of Sicily's treasures and established offshoots. As a result, the quality of the local wines has risen sharply with the progressive modernization of cellar technology - however, these quasi retort wineries are not to be confused with those that have a history and are thus part of Sicilian culture.

The small family winery Nanfro is one of the exceptions in Sicily. There, where the wine market is dominated on the one hand by large wineries and gigantic cooperatives - one goes the difficult way of self-marketing. The valuable soils of the estate are all family owned and are located at an altitude of 350 to 450 meters above sea level. They are poor and sandy soils, they have ideal characteristics for the cultivation of autochthonous Sicilian grape varieties. In combination with the climatic peculiarities of the island location, the conditions for the production of high quality products are obtained. In the vineyard and cellar work of the Lo Certo family, top priority is given to independent products with character. Today, it is far too easy for a small winery to get lost in the mass of Sicilian wine in terms of taste and style. Here, the modern wine cellar is one of the keys to producing crystal-clear wines, of the most consistent and high quality possible. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
