Blog: Tenuta Olim Bauda | Piedmont

The roots of the Tenuta Olim Bauda brand go back to 1961, when Agostino Bertolino acquired the historic estate in the heart of Monferrato. The name Bauda first appeared in writings as early as 1220 and was the old family name that characterized this land for centuries.

From the summer residence and musical salon of tenor Giovanni Battista De Negri to a refuge and military hospital for wounded soldiers during the Second World War, the estate has seen many changes of ownership and use over the centuries. Even today, two inscriptions from the 19th century on the pillars of the gate remind us of the old and 'new' names: Villa Denegri, Olim Bauda.

Understanding the terroir forms a fundamental basis for the production of wines of the highest quality. Olim Bauda's vineyards extend over various municipalities in Monferrato, carefully selected for their characteristics and location. The soils in this region generally consist of clayey-sandy marl of marine origin and limestone.

These offer the different grape varieties the opportunity to fully express their unique characteristics due to the diverse proportions of the main components. The numerous fossils, especially shells of various shapes and sizes, found among the vines are evidence of the marine origin of this area. - Gerardo

"The estate mosaic of Diana, Dino and Gianni Bertolino is scattered over several municipalities of Astigiano. Barbera and Moscato predominate on the estate's vineyards, but there is also room for international varieties such as Chardonnay. The majority of the land was planted between the fifties and the eighties. The siblings now farm them sustainably, limiting the use of pesticides and herbicides to a minimum." - Gambero Rosso

"The grandfather received the license to produce 'wine, sparkling wine and vermouth' in 1927. Today, Dino (production), Gianni (marketing) and Diana (administration) run the business from production to marketing. Bauda is the name of the old villa located in the middle of the estate, which was bought by Bertolino Agostino on June 7, 1961. The 'Tenuta Olim Bauda' comprises 33 hectares of vineyards in particularly suitable locations, five villages around Nizza Monferrato. Barbera, Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Freisa, Moscato, Chardonnay and Gavi are produced according to the rules of organic farming." - Falstaff
