Casa d' Ambra | Campania
The relationship between Ischia's viticulture and the sea is centuries old and as intimate today as it was then. Numerous intersections influence each other, such as the transport of goods to the mainland or the fact that all the island's vineyards cling to the stony coastal walls. These vineyards, which look like thin, green arms, characterize the image of the entire island and are, then as now, very difficult to cultivate, and exclusively by hand. Winemaking is a family tradition on Ischia, one that can only be maintained through sacrifice and dedication. The first generations of islanders knew what their vineyards were worth to them, and producers of the present day, such as Casa d'Ambra, still know this today. They work hard to ensure that the relationship between the sea and the vines will continue tomorrow. - Gerardo [TS05/23]
"In a wine house with over 100 years of history, change always means a departure into the future. In recent years Andrea d'Ambra has carried out a series of experiments with vines from the Ägaean Sea, he acquired land in the Calitto zone, and he conceived a second line of sales to try new styles. But he certainly achieved the greatest effect with the new styling of the classic labels at D'Ambra." - Gambero Rosso

Already in 1500 a D'Ambra sold the most famous wine of the island of Ischia, but it was only in 1988 that Francesco D'Ambra officially founded the wine house of the same name, which at the beginning of the exclusively operated in the bulk wine market. In 1955 the house was transformed from a pure wine merchant to a bottling company, and the three sons of the founder, Mario, Michele and Salvatore, modernized the winery and created the selection wines from the three grape varieties Biancolella, Forastera and Per 'e Palummo. In 1974 the company was completed with the construction of the winery in Forio, unique for its technical equipment and its scenic location. In 1976 Michele D'Ambra died and the company almost had to close down because of bad contracts with an international trading house. It was only in 1984 that Mario d'Ambra managed to overcome the difficulties and, with the help of his grandsons Andrea and Corrado, rebuilt the image of the house. In 1988, just a month before the centenary celebrations, Mario also died, but the grandsons were not discouraged by the loss and subsequently achieved new successes with their policy of selecting the best grapes from their contract winemakers. - Gerardo [TS05/23]
"Founded in 1888, the House of D'Ambra is one of the oldest cellars in Campania and is certainly the most important estate on Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples. At its head is Andrea D'Ambra, who deserves credit for having transformed a traditional winery into an innovative production company, without violating the traditional wine customs." - Gambero Rosso
