Pioneers of the cooperative movement: the historical roots of 1893
The history of the Andrian Winery is inextricably linked to the pioneering spirit of South Tyrol's wine industry, as it was founded in 1893 as the region's very first cooperative winery. At that time, the winegrowers of the small village of Andrian demonstrated exceptional foresight by joining forces to withstand the economic uncertainties of the time and ensure the quality of their products. This historic step laid the foundation for a culture of solidarity that can still be felt today within the historic walls of the winery and has been passed down from generation to generation. Over more than a century, the company has continued to evolve without forgetting its traditional values or its deep connection to village life. Its long experience in viticulture forms the solid foundation on which modern techniques and innovative thinking find fertile ground today. Thus, the founding year 1893 represents not only the beginning, but also a lasting promise of quality and consistency in the South Tyrolean wine landscape.

A unique terroir: limestone soils and river deposits
One key feature that makes the wines from the Andrian winery so distinctive is the geological subsoil on which the vines thrive around the village. The soils consist mainly of calcareous dolomite rock and loamy river deposits from the Adige River, which is a geological peculiarity in this region, otherwise often characterized by porphyry. These barren and permeable soils force the vines to root deeply in order to obtain nutrients and water, which in turn strengthens the plants' resistance. The high lime content gives the wines a distinctive, almost salty minerality and a firm structure that clearly distinguishes them from other South Tyrolean wines. The geological conditions also ensure natural yield regulation, as the vines have to concentrate their energy on fewer but more aromatic grapes. It is precisely this interplay between soil and vine that gives the wines their unmistakable identity and clear character of origin.

The microclimate at Gantkofel: freshness thanks to shade
In addition to the soil conditions, the specific microclimate on the left bank of the Adige River plays a decisive role in the style of wines from Andrian. The vineyards lie in the direct protection of the majestic Gantkofel, a steep rock face that rises to the west of the village and dominates the landscape. This geographical location ensures that the vines are already in the shade in the late afternoon, protecting them from the aggressive evening sun and excessive heat in midsummer. The cooler temperatures in the evening and night hours preserve the natural acidity in the grapes, while allowing the aromas to mature slowly and complexly. This temperature difference between warm days and cool nights is the secret behind the special freshness and elegance of Andrian wines. The climate allows wines to be produced that, despite their physiological ripeness, do not seem too heavy, but always remain lively and full of finesse.

The alliance with Terlan: Together towards a strong future
A modern chapter in the company's history began in 2008 when it entered into a strategic alliance with the neighboring and world-famous Terlan Winery. However, this far-sighted decision did not lead to uniformity, but preserved the independent identity of both brands under a common administrative umbrella and under the leadership of the same cellar master, Rudi Kofler. By pooling resources and expertise, the Andrian Winery was able to raise its quality standards even further and benefit from its partner's distribution structures. Nevertheless, strict care is taken to ensure that the grapes from Andrian are processed separately so as not to distort the specific character of the local terroir. The partnership proves that cooperation in viticulture can lead to a win-win situation in which the individuality of each wine is preserved. Today, both wineries stand side by side as beacons of South Tyrolean viticulture and complement each other perfectly in their different styles.

Craftsmanship perfection: the philosophy behind production
The philosophy behind production in Andrian is characterized by an uncompromising commitment to quality, which begins with meticulous work in the vineyard and continues in the cellar. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand to ensure that only perfectly healthy and optimally ripened grapes are used for further processing. In the cellar, the team focuses on gentle maturation, giving the wines the time they need to develop their full complexity, often through extended storage on the fine lees. Wooden barrels are used very carefully and selectively so as not to mask the fruit, but merely to support the structure of the wine. The goal is always to produce authentic wines that honestly reflect their origin in the glass and are not masked by excessive cellar technology. This “timeless” style of winemaking results in long-lasting products that are still a great pleasure to drink even after many years of aging.

Diversity in a glass: from Lagrein to Sauvignon Blanc
The Andrian Winery's portfolio reflects the diversity and potential of the region, with a focus on grape varieties that optimally convey the calcareous terroir. Particularly noteworthy are the fresh, mineral white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay, which are absolute top performers in the “Selection” line (e.g., ‘Andrius’ or “Doron”). But Andrian has also earned an excellent reputation in the red wine sector, especially with the indigenous Lagrein grape variety, whose flagship wine “Tor di Lupo” is considered one of the best of its kind. Pinot Noir also finds ideal conditions here and shows itself from a particularly elegant and complex side in the “Anrar” wine. In addition to these top wines, the classic line offers reliable and typical varietal representatives that make it easier to enter the world of Andrian. Overall, the range stands for precise, characterful wines that embody the essence of South Tyrol. - Gerardo [TS01/26]
