Lambrusco | Classic

Lambrusco, the finely sparkling red wine from Emilia-Romagna, is one of Italy's most traditional classics. Its origins lie to the west of Modena in the province of Reggio Emilia, where the grape variety of the same name has been cultivated for centuries. Lambrusco Secco is characterized by its lively, fruity character, its bright ruby red color and its fine, persistent foam. It is particularly popular as an uncomplicated accompaniment to regional cuisine. Despite its effervescence, it is not a sparkling wine, but a still wine with a light perlage. The residual sugar content varies depending on the style: dry versions have up to 15 g/l, while sweet versions have 40 to 50 g/l. Lambrusco is generally drunk young and then impresses with its freshness and drinking pleasure.

The Lambrusco grape variety is widespread in several varieties in Emilia-Romagna, which is reflected in the four official DOC zones. Lambrusco di Sorbara is mostly dry and is characterized by its fine acidity. Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro produces more powerful wines, rich in tannins and often with residual sweetness. Lambrusco Reggiano is the most important representative in terms of quantity and is often offered as Frizzante rosso. Finally, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, the smallest DOC area, produces structured and dry wines of excellent quality. One of the most renowned producers in the region is the traditional Medici Ermete winery, which demonstrates the potential of this often underestimated grape variety. - Gerardo [TS07/25]
