St. Magdalener | Classic

St. Magdalener is considered the legendary red wine of South Tyrol and was much better known than Barolo before 1945. This red wine is undoubtedly one of the finest in the region. The DOC area, which was placed under protection in 1971, extends in the northern part of the Bolzano basin from Siebeneich to Leitach. With its intense sunlight, slopes of moraine debris and weathered porphyry rock, this hill zone, known as the amphitheater, is one of the pearls of South Tyrolean viticulture. The well-balanced vineyard of the different varieties of Vernatsch with some Lagrein characterizes this jewel.

St. Magdalener is mainly made from the native Vernatsch grape, with a maximum addition of 10% Lagrein is allowed and has a long tradition. The St. Magdalener wine is characterized by its ruby to garnet red color, which tends to brick red with age. Its aging is consistently dry, but it always remains supple and balanced in its content of tannin and acidity. Its typical taste and bouquet is delicately reminiscent of bitter almonds and impresses with finesse and delicacy.

The St. Magdalener is very popular at home and abroad and always worth a recommendation: the cuvée of noble Vernatsch and a small amount of Lagrein is fruity and easy to drink. The best qualities come exclusively from sites directly in St. Maddalena. The wine is preferably drunk young, but can also be stored for several years. Good quality wines are produced by the Cantina di Bolzano or the Abbey of Muri-Gries, but also many small winemakers, such as Pfannenstielhof, produce top Maddalena wines. - Gerardo [TS06/22]

"If there is one characteristic that applies to all South Tyrolean wines, it lies in the clean primary fruitiness of the wines. Their fruit is animating, their acidity refreshing. A chronicler of the 1960s described them as 'cheerful' because they can be enjoyed in an uncomplicated and carefree way." - Dr. Jens Priewe (Die Weine von Südtirol)

Schiava' (Vernatsch) is the Italian name of a grape variety with numerous variations which is mainly native to South Tyrol and Trentino. It is not uncommon for an entire group of grape varieties to share the same name, the same characteristic being common to Malvasia and Muscat wines. It is only natural for a grape variety that thrives in the triangle between France, Italy and Germany to have different and sometimes somewhat confusing names. In German, the grape variety is known as Vernatsch and some of its variations as Grauvernatsch (Schiava Grigia) as well as Kleinvernatsch (Schiava Gentile), Grossvernatsch (Schiava Grossa) and Mittervernatsch. Other synonyms include Frankenthaler Blau, Koelner Blau, and the universally known Trollinger. Some interpretations of the name assume 'Slavic' (rather than 'slave') when translating 'Schiava'. In some places it is assumed that the grape variety is of Slavic origin.

The main use of this grape variety is in St. Magdalener, where Vernatsch plays a key role. The full name is Alto Adige Santa Maddalena (South Tyrolean St. Magdalener) and refers to red wines from South Tyrol from a precisely defined area in the northern part of Bolzano. The delicate fragrance of these light, fine and rather bright red wines is stes pleasant and the wines are among the most beautiful in the province of Bolzano. Although Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero) is becoming increasingly important in South Tyrol - its quality and reputation are growing year by year - there is still a long way to go in trying to knock St. Madgalener off its throne.

The cultivation area of the original St. Magdalener comprises a series of hill ranges in the valleys of Tyrol as well as in the Eisack Valley, converging in the city of Bolzano. Many of these growing areas have the right to bear the name St. Magdalener as part of their DOC title in their name, officially making them a sort of sub-sub-region of South Tyrol. The areas include Santa Justina, Leitach, St. Peter, Guntschna, St. Georgen, Rentsch and Sand. All wines produced there are also allowed to carry the appellation 'Classico' which suggests a higher quality.

The South Tyrolean St. Magdalener is a medium-weight, fruit-driven red wine which is made from at least 85% Vernatsch (Schiava) grapes. Lagrein, the second most important variety in South Tyrol, may be included in this wine to a maximum of 15% to give a little more color and extracts. - Gerardo [TS06/22]
