Corvinone | Grape variety

Corvinone is an Italian grape variety rich in tradition, which is mainly native to the northern Italian region of Veneto. In the Valpolicella region in particular, it plays a central role as a component of high-quality cuvées such as Valpolicella Classico, Ripasso and Amarone. With its full-bodied character, deep dark color and strong tannin structure, Corvinone makes a decisive contribution to the depth and ageing potential of these wines. It is often confused with its genetically related but independent cousin Corvina, but Corvinone produces larger berries with thicker skins and has an independent aromatic profile with notes of ripe cherries, dark berries and a hint of spice.

In recent years, interest in indigenous grape varieties has risen sharply, which has also brought new attention to Corvinone - not only as a component of classic cuvées, but increasingly also in single-varietal styles. Its suitability for drying using the appassimento method, its good adaptation to the calcareous terroir of the hills around Verona and its potential for ageing make it a promising grape variety with a clear regional identity. Today, Corvinone is an example of the combination of traditional viticulture and modern interpretation in Veneto. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
