Schiava Gentile | Grape variety
The Edelvernatsch grape variety is part of the numerous Schiava varieties in South Tyrol, and its cultivation dates back to Roman times. It is an autochthonous - i.e. indigenous - grape variety that is successfully cultivated only in the province of Bolzano, where it produces high-quality and delicate red wines. The grape variety, also known as 'Rother Vernatsch', is used pure and as a component of numerous cuvées; the area under cultivation is approximately 1,200 hectares. In Italy, this grape variety is also known as Schiava Gentile. - Gerardo [TS04/23]
