Moscato Giallo | Grape variety
Goldmuskateller is one of the oldest known grape varieties in the world - a wine that actually tastes like its grapes smell. It produces intense, aromatic, and distinctly floral wines with aromas reminiscent of nutmeg, elderflower, and exotic fruits. Originally from the Near East, the grape variety has spread across much of the world over the centuries, retaining its distinctive character in many places. Its expressiveness and aromatic richness make it a real specialty in international viticulture.
Goldmuskateller probably arrived in South Tyrol with the Romans when they advanced into the valleys of ancient Raetia in 15 BC. Today, this demanding variety is cultivated in the warm, sun-drenched locations of the Adige Valley between Salurn and Merano, where it finds ideal conditions for its delicate aroma. In South Tyrol, it is known as Moscato Giallo and, with a cultivation area of only about 60 hectares—around 1.2% of the total wine-growing area—is considered a rare specialty. It has had DOC status since 1975 and is one of the most elegant and characterful representatives of this noble variety in Central Europe. - Gerardo [TS10/25]
