Friuli | White Wine

Multilayered, deep and powerful are especially the white wines, all of which have complexity and aging ability. In the eighties they were already the benchmark for the whole of Italy, but this has almost been forgotten. Quite clearly, the territorial conditions define the concentration and power of the white wines. There is a gradient from east to west - and this is independent of the grape variety. The most complex wines grow in the east, namely in the Collio, the Colli Orientali del Friuli (COF) and the adjacent Isonzo. The wines of the micro-vintners from the rocky Carso Mountains, who produce intense, acidic white wines on hard stone, also impress with their complexity. The west caters to the more sophisticated everyday tastes. Here in the vast plain of the Grave growing region, the alluvial soils produce very good, clean wines typical of the grape variety. Lighter wines are also produced between Palmanova and Aquileia near the sea, where sandy soils and larger wineries predominate. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

"In the collective wine memory Friuli - Venezia Giulia is stored as the land of great white wines. For almost 30 years the Italian market has been demanding whites from Friuli. In general, the demand for the whites has increased, ten years ago it was rather the reds that were in demand." - Slow Wine
