Marche | Wine region

Much is different in the Marche than elsewhere in Italy. The Marchegiani are passionate meat and sausage eaters and nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of this, live longer than others. The age distribution in the village of Serrapetrona in the province of Macerata is particularly curious: of the almost 1,000 inhabitants, thirty have already celebrated their centenary. Around the central Italian city of Ancona, along the approximately 170-kilometer-long Adriatic coast, lies the wine-growing region of Marche. This region is already part of the Apennine massif, but is characterized by gentle hilly landscapes. Together with the sea, this area creates a cool, temperate climate with warm, dry summers. Mainly in the hinterland, on often clayey soils, red and white grape varieties are grown on a vineyard area of about 25,000 hectares. This gives the Marche an annual production volume of about 1.6 million hectoliters of wine. - Gerardo [TS07/22]
