Sicily | White Wine

Sicily, one of Italy's wine boom regions, is still primarily characterized by the cultivation of white grape varieties. More than two-thirds of the vineyard area is planted with white grape varieties, although their share has declined somewhat since the turn of the millennium. In addition to the internationally known grape varieties, a large number of indigenous (autochthonous) grape varieties are also grown on the island.

With now 112,700 hectares of vineyards, the island of Sicily, which also includes the volcanic island of Pantelleria in the southwest and the Lipari Islands to the northeast, is Italy's largest wine region. In addition to the wines from Vittoria (Ragusa province), many experts and connoisseurs consider the wines from Etna to be the stars. White wines in particular thrive on the fertile mountain slopes up to almost 1,000 meters above sea level, which - in stark contrast to the boiling interior - have large temperature differences between day and night. The absolute best seller is still the red wine Nero d'Avola. A specialty of the island is, of course, the heavy dessert wine Marsala.

The most important white grape varieties in Sicily include Grillo, Catarratto, Inzolia, Zibibbo and Carricante. The white wines are united by a measured, balanced and sometimes low acidity, as well as a great fruitiness, which is reminiscent of exotic fruits such as pineapple, banana and passion fruit. - Gerardo [TS07/22]

"Sicilian wines used to be known for their richness, but those days are over. Now they are juicy and elegant, because the quality on the sunny island has risen mightily. Whereas the wines once thrilled with their heft, they are now increasingly characterized by finesse. At the same time, the rich tradition of Sicily is not neglected." - Falstaff
