Susumaniello | Grape variety
Susumaniello is a red grape variety that is typical of the Brindisi area and was probably introduced from Dalmatia in ancient times. The name Susumaniello, also known in the region as black Somarello, probably refers to the high yields typical of this grape variety, which are so high that the weight of the grapes weighs the plant down like a donkey. This spectacular yield decreases significantly from year to year, dropping to an average of just under 1 kg per plant. For this reason, Susumaniello fell into oblivion until some winegrowers (including Tenute Rubino) rescued it from oblivion and made it the centerpiece of their viticulture. The Susumaniello shows its exceptional qualities just when yields are declining: black-blue grapes that produce wines with great structure and highly concentrated aromas. - Gerardo [TS03/24]
"Susumaniello is an ancient grape variety of Salento in Puglia, on the heel of the Italian boot. It was almost extinct 25 years ago, with only a few old vines remaining. Yields were considered too low, too complicated in cultivation and aging, with a lot of tannin and a lot of acidity. Tenute Rubino, one of the most important and innovative producers in Puglia, recognized the potential of this variety and took it on. Tenute Rubino has now been working with Susumaniello for over 20 years. At first there was only one wine, Torre Testa, soon followed by others. Today, a good 20 hectares are planted with Susumaniello on Rubino's Jaddico vineyard. It's a success story that has led other winemakers in Salento to produce Susumaniello.
The great thing about Susumaniello is its versatility,' says Luigi Rubino, the winery's dynamic owner. 'You can make powerful, dense red wine from it, as well as a juicy, more approachable type.' High acidity and late harvest, once a stumbling block to the variety's success, are increasingly proving to be an advantage in times of climate change. Top wine is still the Torre Testa, so named after a medieval defense tower near the Jaddico winery. As an entry-level wine, the Oltremé is an absolute value for money." - Falstaff
