In particular, the careful research and selection of indigenous grape varieties has ushered in a new era of quality awareness. The region's most important grape, Sangiovese, presents itself in numerous facets - from the elegant, fruity variety in Chianti Classico to the powerful, long-lasting interpretation in Brunello di Montalcino, which is based on the noble Sangiovese Grosso. Modern clone selections as part of the Chianti Classico research project have helped to further refine the range of grape varieties and rejuvenate the appellation with targeted new plantings and replantings. The Brunello di Montalcino, which is made exclusively from Sangiovese Grosso, is even more powerful and impresses with its complex structure and remarkable ageing potential. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, whose main grape variety Prugnolo Gentile is a variant of Sangiovese, offers a harmonious balance of fruit and spice. However, white grape varieties such as Vermentino also have a firm place in Tuscany. With its fresh citrus notes and fine minerality, this wine offers a summery alternative to full-bodied red wines. Thanks to targeted clone selection and sustainable cultivation methods, Tuscan winegrowers have paved the way for a new generation of high-quality wines in recent decades.
