Story: Camillo Montori | Abruzzo
Page: 1/1
A winery with tradition and vision
The Camillo Montori winery is located on the historic Monte Aureo feudal estate, nestled in the rolling hills of Abruzzo, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast. This privileged location between the sea and the mountains gives the wines an unmistakable profile, characterized by freshness, depth and minerality. Back in the 1960s, the Montori family decided to modernize the old Mezzadrile estate and the traditional farm and convert it to contemporary quality viticulture.
Today, the winery cultivates around 70 hectares of land, of which around 50 hectares are vineyards, 10 hectares are orchards, 5 hectares are olive groves and the remainder is typically mixed cultivation - a structure that reflects the diversity and roots in the region. The modern winery with a processing and storage capacity of around 10,000 hectolitres is the heart of production and was designed to harmonize tradition and technology.
Striving for quality with a regional identity
Camillo Montori's wines are the result of a deep connection to nature, many years of experience and a consistent focus on quality. By combining traditional methods with modern oenological knowledge, the winery succeeds in producing wines that are authentic, precise and expressive. In particular, the indigenous grape varieties Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, but also Pecorino, Passerina and Cerasuolo are vinified with great respect for the terroir.
Special attention is paid to the Colline Teramane growing zone, which has been awarded its own DOCG status due to its outstanding conditions. Camillo Montori was instrumental in bringing this region out of the shadows of mass-produced wine and establishing it as a premium origin for Abruzzo wines full of character. The winery thus exemplifies the transformation of the region: from a supplier of simple bulk wines to a recognized region of origin with high standards.
Hospitality and living culture
In addition to viticulture, the estate also sees itself as a cultural venue. Visitors can taste the estate's wines in a lovingly renovated guest house - accompanied by simple, typical regional dishes that bridge the gap between the cuisines of Abruzzo and the neighboring Marche region. This so-called “border cuisine” emphasizes the culinary identity of a region that not only tolerates diversity, but celebrates it.
Another highlight is the small museum within the winery. Traditional tools, old fermentation vats and historical winemaking equipment are on display here - evidence of the past that Camillo Montori has collected over the years. This exhibition is an expression of the winery's deep connection with the history and heritage of Abruzzo viticulture.
Regional strength with international appeal
Despite being firmly rooted in the region, Camillo Montori has always strived to have a supra-regional impact. Today, the wines are mainly sold in Italy - particularly in restaurants, wine shops and through direct sales to private connoisseurs. At the same time, the winery exports around 30% of its production to many European countries as well as America and Japan. This enables Montori to bring the typicity and class of Abruzzo wines to an international audience.
With its combination of tradition, innovation and passion, Camillo Montori is a beacon in Abruzzo viticulture - a family business that impresses with its authenticity and style and actively shapes the wine world of its region. - Gerardo [TS05/25]
"This winery represents a synonym for Colline Teramane, at the same time it is one of the most important birthmothers of the local DOCG. From the historic winery in the municipality of Controguerra come wines with a pleasingly rustic and traditional style, by which they are always recognizable and which makes them seem extremely interesting." - Gambero Rosso
