Story: Marco Porello | Piedmont
Marco Porello, a name that is inextricably linked with excellent wine production in the Roero region of Piedmont, embodies the tradition and authenticity of this unique region. The Roero, situated between the river Tanaro, the provinces of Asti and Turin and the state road 61, is an area with a diverse landscape and culture. It is characterized by its hills, fertile valleys and the characteristic “rocche”, which frame an untouched, almost wild nature. In addition to viticulture, the Roero also offers agricultural treasures such as Madernassa pears, asparagus from Montà, peaches from Canale as well as truffles, honey and chestnuts. This region is a paradise for gourmets and wine lovers alike, with Marco Porello and his winery playing a central role.
A winery with a focus on quality
The Marco Porello winery stands for family values and a focus on quality. Without the urge for large-scale growth or international expansion, the winery maintains its authenticity and concentration on the essentials: the production of great wines. Marco Porello continuously invests in modern technology without neglecting the traditional spirit of viticulture. More decisive than machines, however, are the intangible values of the business: the use of human hands and passion. Each helper spends around 2,000 hours a year in the vineyard, which underlines the winery's high standards for the quality of its grapes. All the grapes come exclusively from the estate's own vineyards, a concept that gives Porello complete control over production and limits the annual number of bottles - a conscious decision to prioritize quality over quantity.
The renaissance of the Arneis grape variety
One of the special features of the winery is its focus on the Arneis grape variety, which has been associated with the Roero region for centuries. After a period of oblivion, this traditional grape variety has been rediscovered and is now enjoying growing popularity. Marco Porello's Roero Arneis is a prime example of the renaissance of this white grape. The vineyards from which this wine originates are steep, sandy and east-facing, providing the grapes with ideal growing conditions. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand, in small crates, in order to preserve the integrity of the grapes. Each vintage is carefully pressed and processed in order to fully exploit the potential of the vines. The small production volume of around 6,000 bottles per year reflects the focus on artisanal excellence.
Philosophy and commitment to the region
Marco Porello's philosophy combines tradition and innovation. With its work, the winery contributes to strengthening the reputation of the Roero area as an outstanding wine region. At the same time, it remains true to the cultural and natural roots of the region by preserving the characteristic features of the landscape and the grape varieties. Roero Arneis is more than just a wine - it is a testament to the passion, care and dedication that Marco Porello and his team put into every bottle. This commitment makes the winery one of the most impressive ambassadors of the Roero and its wines. - Gerardo [TS11/24]
"The Porello family can look back on a long history of winegrowing. The latest chapter is shaped by Marco, a great advocate of rigorous vineyard work, who is determined to endow his products with clear terroir characteristics. Marco's business is divided into two halves: A modern vinification facility operates in Canale, where the company's headquarters are located, while the ageing halls are located in the municipality of Guarene. The range consists exclusively of wines made from indigenous grape varieties." - Gambero Rosso
