Pitigliano, a picturesque town in the tufa area, in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, is one of the most fascinating historical villages in Italy. It is situated 313 meters above sea level on a tufa promontory of striking beauty, bordered by green valleys crossed by the Lente and Meleta rivers.
Vine-growing has ancient origins in Maremma and around Pitigliano: since ancient times there is evidence of the cultivation of wine from the times of the Etruscans, Greeks and Romans. Especially the white wines of the area are well known and at that time were still stored in wine jugs in the cold tufa caves deep under the city.
