Blog: Brunello di Montalcino | Classic

Tuscany, a jewel of the Italian wine world, holds a very special treasure: Brunello di Montalcino. This noble drop is not only synonymous with the highest moments of pleasure for wine lovers. Its origin, the selected grape varieties, the special aging in wooden barrels and last but not least its unique taste make it a sought-after and expensive wine.

Origin and grape varieties
Brunello di Montalcino comes from the region of the same name in Tuscany, more precisely from the town of Montalcino. The area is characterized by a warm Mediterranean climate and calcareous soils that provide optimal conditions for Sangiovese, the main grape variety for Brunello. Sangiovese is known for its elegance and aromas of red fruits, herbs and spices.

Aging in wooden barrels
The aging of Brunello di Montalcino is of great importance for its quality. Fermentation is followed by a long aging in oak barrels, which must last at least 24 months. Some producers choose even longer aging periods to maximize the complexity and finesse of the wine. During this time, the wine absorbs the aromas of the wood and gains depth and structure.

Taste and characteristics
Brunello di Montalcino stands out for its intensity and complexity. In the glass, it usually presents a deep ruby red color. On the nose, multi-layered aromas of ripe cherries, dark chocolate, tobacco and spices unfold. On the palate, it impresses with a harmonious balance of powerful fruit, fine tannins and a pleasant acidity. The finish is long-lasting and elegant, a real treat for discerning palates.

The exclusivity and high quality of Brunello di Montalcino are reflected in the price. The elaborate care of the vineyards, the selective harvest of Sangiovese grapes, the many years of aging in wooden barrels and the limited production contribute to make this wine one of the more expensive wines. In addition, the demand for Brunello di Montalcino is high worldwide, which further increases its value and makes it a sought-after commodity for lovers of exquisite wine enjoyment. - Gerardo [TS10/23]
