Teroldego | Grape variety
Origin and history
The red Teroldego grape variety is closely linked to the Trentino region in northern Italy and is one of the oldest indigenous varieties in this area. It is particularly widespread in the area around Campo Rotaliano, an alluvial plain between the Adige and Noce rivers, where vines have been cultivated for centuries. The name Teroldego itself can be traced back to local names - some say it is derived from “Tiroler Gold” (Tyrolean gold), reflecting the historical appreciation of the variety.

Cultivation and vine characteristics
The grapes have a dark, almost black-blue skin and are often grown on sandy-gravelly, calcareous soils, such as those found in Trentino. They are characterized by compact bunches with thick skins, which give the wines depth and color.

Style and typical aroma
Unsurprisingly, Teroldego wines are characterized by a powerful appearance: deep ruby red, developing garnet red reflections as they mature. Aromatically, they reveal intense notes of dark fruits such as blackberries or blackcurrants, accompanied by spicy hints - for example, cinnamon, cloves, or even licorice - as well as a distinct minerality and freshness. On the palate, Teroldego impresses with its structure: pronounced tannins, but often smooth, and a lively acidity that makes the wine vibrant and suitable for aging.

Grape variety use and diversity
Teroldego can be excellent as a single-varietal wine—it is used exclusively under the Teroldego Rotaliano DOC label. At the same time, the variety is also used in cuvées or blends with other indigenous grape varieties such as Lagrein or Marzemino, which can result in complex and multi-layered wine styles - a combination of fruit, spice, and regional terroir.

Relevance and rarity
Although Teroldego has a long tradition, the area under cultivation remains relatively small, making the variety a rather rare treat. This uniqueness adds to the fascination of Teroldego for wine lovers looking for something extraordinary. At the same time, it gives winemakers the opportunity to work with uncompromising quality and character of origin.

Serving suggestions
When young, Teroldego is often powerful and fruity—perfect with pasta with ragù, grilled meat, or strong cheese. As it matures, it develops impressive depth and is suitable for more substantial dishes such as game or braised meat. Its storability makes it an exciting companion for sophisticated moments of enjoyment. Overall, it can be said that Teroldego is much more than a regional specialty - it is a life's work in a glass. Those who embrace this variety can expect a red grape full of character, history, and enjoyment. - Gerardo [TS11/25]
