Story: Vermentino di Sardegna | Grape variety
Page: 2/3
The origins of Vermentino are shrouded in mystery, but numerous theories shed light on possible routes of distribution. While some experts suspect its origin in Liguria or other parts of northern Italy, there are indications that it spread to the southern French regions of Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon as well as the nearby island of Corsica. Other theories even see Spain as the original home of Vermentino, although the grape variety is hardly known there today.
Corsica's proximity to Sardinia - separated only by the Strait of Bonifacio, which is just a few kilometers wide - could have played a key role in the history of Vermentino. Millions of years ago, the two islands were part of one land mass, which may have favored the exchange of flora and fauna, including vines.
Climatic and geographical influences on the style
Sardinia's Mediterranean climate, with its hot summers, mild winters and constant sea breezes, offers ideal conditions for Vermentino. The soils vary from granite to limestone to sandy mixtures, giving each wine its own mineral character. At higher altitudes, such as in Gallura, wines with particularly fresh acidity and fine aromas are produced, while lower altitudes produce more powerful and opulent styles.
Aragosta: a symbol of quality and tradition
Among Sardinia's Vermentino wines, the Aragosta from Cantina Santa Maria la Palma stands out. With its iconic lobster logo, it has become a symbol of Sardinian white wines. Its quality and attractive price-performance ratio make it one of the most popular representatives of Vermentino di Sardegna. Aragosta stands for the ability of Sardinian winegrowers to successfully combine tradition and modernity.
Stylistics and aromatic profile
The classic Vermentino di Sardegna is a straw-yellow colored wine with fresh, floral and fruity notes. Aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers and Mediterranean herbs dominate the bouquet, while the fine minerality on the palate ensures elegance and length. These characteristics make Vermentino the perfect accompaniment to fish, seafood, poultry and light pasta dishes.
The heavier varieties, often with higher alcohol levels and a more intense flavour, harmonize perfectly with richer dishes such as grilled fish or spicy cheese. - Gerardo [TS11/24]
