White wine with character - Friulano, the wine specialty of Friuli
When you think of the Friuli wine region, the image is clear: green rolling hills and rugged karst landscapes, calcareous soils, and proximity to the Adriatic Sea, which moderates the climate and gives the wines a special freshness. This terroir is home to one of the most distinctive wine traditions in northeastern Italy—Friulano. For many lovers of Italian wines, it is considered the quintessential wine of Friuli: elegant, aromatic, and unmistakable in style.

Origin, soil, and climatic characteristics
Located between the Alps and the Adriatic coast, Friuli offers ideal conditions for vines with its diverse soils and mild climate. Friulano finds optimal conditions especially in the east of the region—in the areas of Collio and Colli Orientali del Friuli. Here, mineral-rich, often calcareous and loamy soils prevail, giving the wine a beautiful minerality and fine finesse. The proximity to the Adriatic Sea and the protective effect of the Julian Alps create mild air currents and balanced average temperatures. This ensures that the grapes retain their typical freshness and clarity — characteristics that are often perceived as distinctive features of Friulano.

Wine type and character: This is Friulano
Friulano is a dry white wine that captivates with its lively acidity, clear structure, and delicate aromas—quite unlike many stereotypical heavy white wines. Its style deliberately reflects the terroir: light, elegant, yet with depth. Typically, the wines are medium-bodied, permeable in their development, and offer a balanced mix of freshness and gentle spice. In the glass, Friulano reveals delicate, often floral and fruity notes. Almonds, white flowers, and aromas of pear and ripe yellow fruits are often recognizable — sometimes accompanied by a hint of bitter almond or a subtle herbaceous nuance that makes the wine distinctive. This combination gives it an elegant, slightly Mediterranean character that harmonizes wonderfully both as an aperitif and with a variety of dishes.

History and significance of the wine tradition
Until the 1960s, red grape varieties dominated in Friuli, but in recent decades the tide has turned: the region has developed into one of Italy's most renowned white wine regions. This transformation was shaped by dedicated winemakers and a return to indigenous grape varieties — above all Friulano. The efforts paid off: today, Friulano is one of Friuli's classic white wines and is highly regarded — not least because of its ability to clearly and elegantly reflect terroir and tradition in the glass. This change has made Friuli one of Italy's most popular wine regions for white wines.

An outstanding producer: Livio Felluga
When you talk about Friulano, you inevitably think of Livio Felluga. This winery is considered an institution in Friuli and has contributed significantly to the region's high international reputation. Livio Felluga masterfully combines tradition and modern winemaking to give Friulano expression and elegance. Felluga's wines are characterized by pure fruit, mineral precision, and an elegant, balanced acidity structure. They show what Friulano can do—clear character, fine freshness, and great drinkability. For many wine lovers, these wines are the epitome of what Friuli can mean in a glass.

Why Friulano is an experience
Friulano is not a wine you want to mask—it thrives on clarity, precision, and authenticity. Its lively acidity, delicate aromas, and mineral structure make it a wine that seems easily accessible, but reveals great depth and character upon closer inspection. It is a wine that embodies its origin and landscape: fresh, honest, and full of personality. For anyone who wants to discover Italy beyond the large, well-known wine regions, Friulano from Friuli is an ideal introduction — a wine that leaves you wanting more and impressively showcases the region's potential. - Gerardo [TS12/25]
